Heather Clark - Grade 1

Heather was born virtually without arms or legs due to the effect of the Thalidomide drug. Having ridden as a child, she soon realised (having spent more time underneath the pony than on top) that carriage driving with the RDA was the way forward.  She now competes with her beloved Irish Cob x Trotter "Barney" at Club and National Level and has represented Great Britain Individually at both Greven at the World Championships in 2002 and also at Hopetoun in 2004. In her quest for selection Heather is supported by Debbie Dale (groom) and the Poulter family.

Terry Kirby -  Grade 1

Terry a natural all round sportsman, suffered a tumour on the spine leaving him paralysed from the chest down. In 2006 after only 3 years of driving experience he swept the board at the National Novice Single Pony events and was also a member of the British Silver Medal Winning Team in Hellendoorn.

He will be driving his partner and support team, Rowena Coldwell’s Welsh Cob Megan.

Margaret Lupton - Grade 1

Margaret was born with abnormalities of the lower spine and limbs but has let nothing get in her way. An active rider with the Annandale and Eskdale RDA she was introduced to driving as a teenager and has since gone from strength to strength. It was as a result of watching the World Championships at Hopetoun in 2004 that she aspired to drive for her country.  With the back up of Catriona Murray she competed with Catriona's tandem pony Tartan at club events all over Scotland but this year will be partnering her new Welsh Cob "Baz" who recently joined the Lupton Team.  She is supported by her husband and daughter Hannah.

Lindsey Tyas - Grade 1

Lindsey, was paralysed down her right side as a result of a road accident at the age of four and despite the advice of her doctors she was determined to continue to ride. She took up driving when she was 14 and experienced the thrill and adrenalin rush and has never looked back. She has significant driving experience to fall back on, having represented Great Britain five times including the First World Championships at Wolfsburg in 1998. She has twice been a member of the GB Silver Medal winning team and will again be partnering her own Welsh Cob Jack. In 2007 she was voted Inspirational Sports Person of the year in the Norfolk Sports Awards and subsequently appointed as Patron of Norfolk Disability Sports

She is supported by her family and partner Gordon Paice.

Judi Ralls - Grade 2

Judi from Farnham in Surrey developed Ankylosing Spondylitis at the age of 10 (chronic juvenile arthritis). She rode side-saddle until finally giving up as the disease progressed. Since then Judi has had multiple hip replacements. She competed at three World Championships with her own Welsh pony bringing back both Individual and team medals. In 2006 she was a member of the Silver Medal winning team and was the Grade 2 Reserve World Champion driving Angela Flanagan’s horse “Charlie”. This year she will drive one of Rachel Stevens’ World Championship ponies, Glenmead Flashman.

Elaine Schaschke - Grade 2

Following a serious riding accident in 2000, Elaine Schaschke from March in Cambridgeshire took up carriage driving with encouragement from Tom Farmer. She started out with a 2-wheel exercise cart bought from a Gypsy and only became fully involved with Horse Driving Trials in 2007. She’s a member of the East Anglian Carriage Driving Group and is very grateful for all the help and guidance she has received from fellow members. Elaine drives a chestnut Welsh Section C mare and is keen to gain more experience and progress up the ladder.

She is supported by her family and friends

Brenda Hodgson - Grade 1 : Pairs

Brenda was Paralysed from the waist down as the result of an operation for a congenital heart defect at the age of 11. Since taking up carriage driving over 20 years ago Brenda has competed with Single, pair and team at national level and has been 7 times Scottish Points league champion in the small pony class. Ably supported by her husband David, Brenda drove her pair Goldy and Rush to Gold medal position at the World Championships at Hopetoun in 2004 and in 2006 was a Bronze Medallist at Hellendoorn. This year she will be driving her new pony pair Rascal and Marito.
